Fancy text spam in live stream?

Main Post:

I was helping mod a live stream the other day and had a bunch of accounts all of a sudden start spamming a horrible message. It got past auto-mod because it was written in fancy text (the copy paste text fonts), which apparently can’t be read by auto-mod.

Does anyone know how to prevent fancy text from being sent in live chats?

Top Comment: Just don't depend on auto-mod and actually moderate manually?

RECENT SPAM IN INBOX (outlook.live.com) - 1st Noticed 11/24/22

  1. Why is there so much spam/scam emails making it through to my inbox. I have always had the box checked in Junk Mail settings that says "Only trust emails from addresses in my safe senders and safe domains list, but this apparently no longer works. I am getting bombarded with SPAM. Microsoft, what is the problem? Did you change your filtering? Something is broken, please fix it!!!!
  2. Also, why doesnt the "Block Sender" work? This has been broken for years.

Why is Outlook Live Spam/Junk Filter so bad?

Main Post:

Just recently (3 weeks), my Outlook Live email account (old Hotmail address) gets flooded with spam and junk emails (over 30 a day). These emails are so obviously spam/junk/phishing emails and it amazes me how they are not picked up by the spam/junk filter. I hardly ever use to get junk email at all on this account, maybe one a week if that.

What has changed?

Edit: I pay an annual subscription for this account. I would expect better spam/junk filtering.

My Google email account gets virtually zero spam.

Top Comment: The weird thing is sometimes I get emails from Microsoft themselves going to spam. I would think anything with an @Microsoft.com would at least be whitelisted?

Cannot block or report a spam company through my Outlook.live.com?

Main Post:

There's this spam company that keeps sending numerous emails daily to my Junk mail and I block the emails and report the emails and they still arrive?

Has anyone else had trouble with [email protected] please? Thanks for any advice on how to get rid of these emails permanently.

Top Comment: I've tried blocking that email address, I've tried reporting it as spam, now I actually go in and report it as a concern and am having to use a different reason from the preselected list each time. But for some reason, it does not block it and no one seems to be doing anything about it. I used to get it under " [email protected] " but that seems to have stopped awhile ago and is now only "info@". It's beyond frustrating that blocking an email address doesn't seem to stop it from contacting me, I don't care if it goes into Junk/Spam, blocked should mean blocked.

Sent emails going straight to live.com recipients' spam

Main Post:

Hi all,

I'm not having any luck getting to the bottom of this so would be grateful for advice.

Every single email I send from my business email to a live.com email address goes straight to spam.

I've recently set up a personalised business email using my own domain through Zoho mail. I followed the guides to set up all the DNS configurations correctly, and have also configured DMARC so I'm getting reports through on that. The DMARC reports from gmail and live.com/outlook show the email passing all the checks. I've recently adjusted the DMARC from no policy to quarantining 10% of suspect messages - so far none have been flagged but I don't know if the DMARC settings will influence live.com sending my valid emails to spam.

I have no issues with gmail or iCloud. And I'm not sending business emails yet, just testing it out - so every email has been to a single family/friend recipient, text only, no sign of spam. I've even tried completely blank emails and these go to spam too.

I obviously can't use this as a business email if it goes straight to clients' spam folders, and I can't tell them all to bother whitelisting it in advance.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you!

Testing Office 365 EOP spam filter in live environment?

Main Post:

The short and sweet is this:

Client doesn't want to pay for dedicated spam filtering service like Mimecast, but they already have O365, but our MSP left it at default settings. I being Tier 1 Help Desk at the MSP get various tickets every week requesting that we individually block the domain which is not going to get very far.

In spite of being a bit of a novice with less than 5 months of experience in IT, I take on the task of adjusting the spam filter because it's fun for me I suppose. I made several test filters with various settings and aggressiveness. Say, setting a separate filter for each bulk threshold number and prepending the subject line with "Filter X" so I know which one caught it and which number is too low before I start getting false positives.

Since the environment is already live with 100+ users, my general approach was to set a rule that targets the users who are members of the info@ public facing distro list. When I started catching inter-organizational mails I realized the rule took things a bit too literally and gave me back and forth e-mail from anyone who was in that distro list and got mail directly addressed to them and wouldn't let me target the distro list itself unless I changed it to "the recipient address contains 'info'".

The test filters target my mailbox which is not part of the distro list. The idea being "look, but don't touch" and not wanting to affect the live flow of mail. The problem is that aside from the forwarding rule, none of my filters crafted to catch spam and bulk seem to be having any affect. I suspect this is because the rules target my account specifically which was intended to not impact live mail and so because my mailbox is not in the "To" field, none of it applies.

My going theory right now was to alter the original Bcc rule and change that to "Add these recipients to the 'To' box" instead, but I wanted to see if anyone could look over that before I chase that down the wrong rabbit hole and end up exposing the mailbox to the public or something.

Top Comment:

Too much trouble, the benefits of a external spam filter far exceeds the time and cost of you fiddling around with EOP which is terrible in my opinion, maybe go for something lesser than Mimecast like Spamtitan, it does generic spam filtering but won't help with the advanced phishing threats.

Do not spam emoji's on YouTube live streams that AH do, or any live streams on YouTube for that matter.

Top Comment: Keep in mind, people, that your Gmail account is part of your Google account, and how many important services is that attached to? Your cell phone? Internet service? Electric company? Xbox? PlayStation? Nintendo? Steam? Epic? Uplay? Origin? Do you use a Gmail account to log into your non-Google streaming and video service accounts? I HIGHLY recommend everybody starts setting up alternate, non-Google email accounts, be they Outlook, Protonmail, or any other free provider that's been around for a while. Maybe not Yahoo, though. If a service doesn't let you have a backup recovery email address, just change it over solely to an alternate. If Google can shut you down for posting banal, inoffensive icons, they really don't need any reason at all to do so.

Anyone else seeing an increase in spam landing into inbox recently?

Main Post:

I am seeing a lot of spam emails in different languages arrive in my Outlook online inbox. Just wondering if anyone else is seeing the same behavior?
About the same amount of mail is arriving in my junk e-mail box, but probably a tenfold increase for my inbox.

Top Comment:

Yes, 20-25 spam emails a day. Creating rules doesn’t even touch it.

Spam email has gotten very worse the past 3 months. What do I do?

Main Post:

For whatever reasons, spam emails get through the Junk folder and spam filters Microsoft uses, straight to into my Inbox , and every spam email marked by the sender has High Priority (with a red ❗ exclamation mark and a red 🚩 flag icon makes it to the notifications on my phone, (for every Outlook.com account I have connected on my Outlook Android app.) several times every day.

In short I get 'ding, ding' twice or more every few hours on my phone and, to be frank, it's driving me nuts over here... :/

I've been reporting every new spam email as both Phishing and Junk Mail, but the spam filter doesn't make it any better no matter how much I try to 'train' it.

What do I do at this point? It's mentally unhealthy to try and win this losing battle.

Top Comment: I've just come to this sub to see if others are having this problem. I don't wanna get a new email, I've had this one for sooooo many years.

The collapse of Outlook's spam filtering capability: where do we go from here?

Main Post:

With spam filtering no longer working across the board it's clear Outlook is classing itself as a failed product on its last legs. What action should we as individuals take from here to continue using email effectively?

Looking for generic recommendations.

Top Comment: It's so bad. I've now blocked over 3000 emails and I still get emails from the same junk vendor. Many times I get junk email from the ads that are listed above. Camp Lejune at least 10 email a day and that after blocking the name Camp Lenjune or whatever it is. It's gotten so bad my Anti Virus is picking out malicious email. I've locked down my entire email and still get dozen of junk files coming through. I've had my email from the dawn of email accounts. I followed every instruction offered by MS. They sold us out. They sold out non paying customers to get us to purchase their shiet product. It's so frustrating to have to dig through the garbage everyday. Not even that it all goes to the important folder. When they use my email address as a personal name, its junk. I've reached out so many times MS does not care. Scam artists.
